Calling all teachers! Do you have qualified educators in your district’s leadership?

I just finished reading a comment on Mark’s recent post “The Silent Majority and Vocal Minority”. It comes from Dan Middleman, M. Ed. and it reads: I’m in Wake County (Raleigh). We just got Rhee’s underling Tony Tata. So far, though, he’s treading lightly and avoiding controversial moves (in the face of a very conservative [...]

STUDY SAYS CALIFORNIA TEACHERS' PENSIONS FALL SHORT OF OTHER PUBLIC WORKERS

By MARY WILLIAMS WALSH, NY Times | http://nyti.ms/kCgYOn A teacher in Los Angeles. California might reduce public pensions to trim its huge budget deficit.Kevork Djansezian/Getty Images May 5, 2011 - As states and cities debate whether benefits can or should be cut back for public workers, a new study suggests some of those workers have a lot more to fight for than others. The study found

Where is the district leadership on budget cutting and keeping teachers?

I see and hear a lot of district leaders and district leader organizations supporting HB 400 which does the following:

1) Raising the 22-1 class size cap for grades K-4 to 25-1.

2) Eliminating the requirement that districts cannot pay teachers less next year than they earned this year. It also would eliminate the state minimum salary schedule, letting school districts set their own compensation systems with their own rules.

3) Allowing school boards to furlough teachers and reduce their salaries accordingly.

4) Changing the date for notice of non-renewal of a teacher’s contract from the current 45th day before the end of instruction to the last day of instruction.

5) Allowing a district to declare a financial emergency at any time for purposes of doing a

Obama - giving credit where credit is due

I am often critical of this President and his administration, most notably on educational policy.

But I also believe in giving credit where it is deserved.

My immediate reaction a week ago is that he and his administration did a remarkable job of keeping the operation against Bin Laden closely held. Here I cannot help but remember someone in the Bush administration who bragged - I think it was to the Wall Street Journal - that they could track Bin Laden by his satellite phone, which of course was then promptly turned off.

Obama knew there were risks, considered them, gave people on his team a chance to express them and thereby improve the overall plan.

When Steve Croft tried to push him in particular directions, he was able to respond in a way that demonstrated considered judgment, a reasonableness of temperament that one would want in a leader making critical decisions. He also did not find it necessary to

Place No One Above Ya, Sweet Lady

Recently, I was watching the movie 2Pac Resurrection, the posthumously narrated biographical film about the rapper Tupac Shakur. In one of the segments, 2Pac discusses his prison stint and the people who sent him letters and visited him during his time behind bars. One of those people, of course, was his mother, Afeni Shakur. Their relationship strained over the years, but his prison sentence forced the two back together. The irony, of course, is that they were once together in jail while Ms. Shakur was pregnant with 2Pac during her time as a Black Panther.

When I first heard the song, I couldn’t fully grasp their situation. I knew as much about 2Pac’s life as MTV would reveal. To the general media, he was a chart-topping, record-selling, reckless, Black thug with way too much money on his hands and too much celebrity. I didn’t know much about Dionne Warwick nor C. Dolores Tucker. I

Education cuts are happening around the country and Texas is by no means immune from this phenomenon. Indeed, Texas arguably is facing the largest deficit of any state in the union. Yet, despite a surplus of money in the rainy day fund, opportunities to raise revenue by retracting subsidies to certain sectors of the economy, and fixing the structural deficit to raise the revenue promised by Governor Perry in 2006, our Governor and Legislature believe they have a mandate to decimate school funding for the foreseeable future. Indeed, for the first time in 27 years, we wil
